Strawberry Fun Facts

If you haven’t ever been, here’s some tidbits about strawberries you might not have known…

  • Plant City, Florida is the Winter Strawberry Capital of the World.
  • Florida strawberries are also known as winter morsels of sunshine.
  • Plant City area is a mecca for the sweetest, most luscious strawberries around.
  • Hillsborough County is the largest commercially producing area in the U.S. during the winter months.
  • Strawberries have an impact on our community exceeding $350 million a year.
  • The 22 million 20-inch flats of strawberries produced annually, placed end to end, would extend from Plant City to Seattle and back again, with room for a side trip – totaling 6,944 miles.
  • The six patented Florida varieties of strawberries are Carmine, Earlibrite, Rosa Linda, Strawberry Festival, Sweet Charlie and Winter Dawn.  A new variety with patent pending, currently being licensed is called “Florida Radiance.”
  • The first American species of strawberry was cultivated in about 1835.
  • The strawberry got its name from the common practice of growing berries under straw to protect them from winter cold and late spring frosts.
  • The strawberry plant was originally grown in Northern Europe, but wild species are also found in Russia, Chile and North America.  Today’s commercial varieties are generally descendents of specimens found in northeast U.S. and Chile.
  • Strawberry leaves grow on the stem in groups of three.
  • The strawberry plant grows close to the ground and has a short woody stem.
  • A member of the rose family, strawberries sometimes give off a rose-like aroma.
  • Wild strawberries were reportedly a favorite food of Daniel Boone who walked miles out of his way to spend an hour in a ripe berry patch.
  • Cool nights and sunny days increase the sugar content in strawberries.
  • The world’s largest strawberry shortcake was created in Plant City, Fla in 1999 – it was 827 square feet, made with 7,800 pints of fresh Florida strawberries.

It started yesterday, but you can still catch some of the E.L.L.A. Fest over the weekend! Details?

What is the E.L.L.A. Music Festival?

A Musical Celebration of the Florida Female Artist. Elevate.Listen.Love.Appreciate.  E.L.L.A.

“E.L.L.A, A Musical Celebration of the Florida Female Artist,” is here to showcase to the people of Orlando the wonderful and extremely talented women that grace our fine city and state. Its purpose is to help elevate the inner spirit of all artists who have not yet heeded the call to create; to support and listen to what we, as a community of believers and communicators, have to say; to love one another, and to help spread that love beyond the walls of our inner self; and to appreciate, and to show our appreciation of what has come from our home, before it goes away and never comes back. We believe that Florida has some of the strongest and most talented women in the world, and they deserve to be heard, viewed, and celebrated. By creating this festival, we want to make sure that they are.”
